Key Stage 1 - Years 1 and 2
The transition from Early Years to Key Stage 1 is a smooth and well organised process, so when children begin Year 1 their teachers know exactly how to challenge and develop their learning. The school day like in the early years, begins at 8:50 however the children can walk into their classrooms from 8:40 each day, and are then collected by parents/carers at their 'lines' on the infant playground when the school day finishes at 3:15pm. Children’s individual Levels of Achievement are discussed and learning evolves from the EYFS curriculum to the National Curriculum.
The structure of Key Stage 1 develops the fantastic foundations embedded by EYFS staff as the children continue their learning journey at Harold Court. Reading, Writing and Mathematics form the main focus of the curriculum and have daily focussed lessons.

However, through exciting topics such as; Space, Jamaica, Antarctica. The children study a variety of curriculum areas including; Science, Art, Design and Technology, Music, History, Geography and ICT in a way that is challenging and motivating. Children also have a daily Phonics lesson and with P.E. twice a week, our children are fully engaged during their school day!
The class room settings are bright and airy with stimulating displays adding to children’s implicit learning. Lessons are taught both inside and outside as often as possible and include practical activities so that learning is varied and interesting to all children regardless of their learning style. ‘

Maths is a big focus of our day and we enjoy mental maths challenges. There are lots of opportunities to apply our maths skills using technology and our school environment. We are working hard to learn key number facts and use these to solve a variety of problems. Our lessons are as practical as possible to ensure our maths learning is fun and hands-on especially for more complex mathematical concepts. We recognise and celebrate developing maths skills and award a ‘Mighty Mathematician’ from each class each week.
Practical maths is key to confident
At Harold Court Primary, the children participate in a 20 minute daily guided reading session with their teacher. In small groups of similar ability, the children read a text chosen by the teacher; the text is easy enough to read with some fluency but offers opportunity for them to develop their use of different strategies to work out new words. Teachers may then engage children in discussion about what they have read. Whilst teachers are working with a specific group, other children may be participating in a range of “reading” activities such as phonic games, using magnetic letters to read and spell words, comprehension activities, independent reading and follow up activities related to their guided reading books. The aim of guided reading is to support all children to become enthusiastic independent readers.
Phonics in KS1 consists of daily 20 minute sessions to teach children to read quickly and skilfully.Sessions are taught following the Letters and Sounds programme and are taught at a fast pace and are very interactive to ensure that all children are engaged. Children are set in groups according to which phase they are currently working on. Each Monday children are given a set of spellings which are relevant to the sounds that they are learning and they are then tested on these spellings the following Monday. Children start in phase one where the focus are children’s speaking and listening skills. work up to phase six where the main aim is for children to become more fluent readers and more accurate spellers. Children who require extra support with their phonics are given extra sessions throughout the week in small groups to improve their phonics knowledge.
We have 2 PE lessons a week which cover games, gymnastics, dance and athletics. This gives us opportunities to keep physically active and healthy and learn about how we can be more active outside of school too. Specific skills such as balance and co-ordination, jumping, turning and throwing are taught through fun and engaging games and the use of a variety of equipment. Practise makes perfect and prepares us for competing at our Sports Day in the summer.
